Thinking about a coloured gemstone for your engagement ring?

If you’re looking for an engagement ring and are considering a coloured stone there are a few more things to consider other than just if you like the colour! Some coloured gemstones are better suited to an engagement ring than others. As an engagement ring needs to last a lifetime and will be worn every day so you’ll want a stone that is hard enough to go the distance. Rubies and Sapphires are great choices as they are just below diamonds in terms of their hardness.  When most people think of sapphires they generally think of Blue Sapphires but they also come in Pink, Green, Yellow, Gold, Purple, Orange, colour change or a mix of colours (this is often referred to as a Parti Sapphire).

Other stones you may like to consider include : Chrysoberyl, Alexandrite or an Aquamarine which are just under Rubies & Sapphires in terms of their hardness. Tourmalines are also a good choices and these come in a range of colours including pink, red, green & blue. One of my favourite stones is called a Pariaba Tourmaline these come in amazing electric blue and green colours. They are much rarer than tourmalines and will come with a higher price tag but the colours will blow you away. The only other thing to consider if you want to go with a tourmaline is that they tend to show the dirt quicker so you’ll have to factor in some extra time to give them a clean every month. If you love green you may be thinking about an emerald but as a soft stone they can easily crack if knocked hard enough so they are better suited to a dress ring that you only wear occasionally.
