How do I care for my jewellery?

With a little care, your fine jewellery should stand the test of time.

To keep gemstones sparkling, clean them when they start to get dirty. The best way to clean fine jewellery is in a cup of warm water with a few drops of ordinary dish detergent and some cloudy ammonia (available from the supermarket). Using an old toothbrush, scrub gently then just rinse with warm water and pat dry with a tissue.

A home ultrasonic cleaner can be used to clean ruby, sapphire, diamond, amethyst, citrine, garnets, and unadorned gold and platinum jewellery but shouldn't be used to clean emerald, peridot, pearls or silver jewellery. If in doubt, don't use it.

To protect your jewellery, don't keep it in a tangle in a jewellery box as gems can scratch metal or each other. Store each piece separately or wrap each one in tissue paper or a soft cloth. When you travel it's important to make sure your jewellery doesn't rub against each other in your bag.

Remove gemstone rings and bracelets before vigorous exercise or working with your hands and take them off at night while you are sleeping. Some gem varieties can damage with a sharp blow.

It's best to keep jewellery away from chlorine and other household chemicals. Try to put your jewellery on after applying hairspray, perfume, and cosmetics.
